3 The Navy
David Pellerin/Caller-Times The Navy's presence in Corpus Christi has helped to produce quality NJROTC students in the city's high schools, particularly, in recent years, the award-winning unit at Flour Bluff High School. The Navy, with its bases in Corpus Christi, Ingleside and Kingsville, provides more than jobs, although it provides those, too.
Grooming standards
Everyone knows that regulations prohibit hair that touches the collar or the top of the ear. Mustaches are the most facial hair you'll see on an active duty member.
Educated workforce
Pilots have to have a college degree. When they stay here, Corpus Christi gets educated professionals in the workforce.
Leadership
Two Navy retirees, Billie Gunter and Ron Sadler, were mayors of Kingsville; retired Col. Luther Jones, who commanded the Corpus Christi Army Depot on Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, is the only ex-Corpus Christi mayor granted the title mayor emeritus.
In the schools
Cmdr. Armando Solis, leader of the Flour Bluff High School national champion NJROTC, not to mention those leaders at Miller, Ray and Aransas Pass high schools.
Navy base-generated jobs
More than 20,000 active duty and civilian.
Payroll
$971 million, 21 percent of Kleberg, Nueces and San Patricio counties' total.
