9 An outdoor gym

George Tuley/Caller-Times
Bicyclists use Ocean Drive as a 22-mile loop. Runners use the seawall's mile markers to pace themselves and the steps for additional exercise. The view provides motivation to go outdoors and exercise.

The walkers, runners, cyclists and skaters who use the bayfront for a gym are getting their money's worth, not to mention a great view. They seem to smile more and grunt and grimace less than most gym rats.
"Walking and looking at the water, your mind just ... it's meditation," said Belinda Castro, a bail bond company owner who walks daily. "You're not thinking about anything."
Your Bayfront options include, but are not limited to:

  • Cycling, walking or running along 11 miles of bike paths and sidewalks lining Shoreline Boulevard and Ocean Drive from the Art Museum of South Texas to the north gate of the Naval Air Station.

  • Skating along sidewalks, including the seawall.

  • Running up and down the steps of the seawall, for a combination of aerobic and anaerobic benefits. Uses less electricity than a club-quality stair stepper.

  • Working out at McCaughan Park's exercise stations, which include a chin-up bar, parallel bars, a balance beam and other equipment.

  • Fees? None. Your tax dollars at work.
