17 Cowboys
George Tuley/Caller-Times The number of cowboys may be diminished but as long as there is a need for cattle, there will be ranchers and ranch hands like Jose Salazar. We still eat beef, which means that cowboys - actual cattle ranch hands as opposed to rodeo performers - continue their work in 21st century South Texas. But things have changed:
Cowboy tools
Pickup trucks, computers, helicopters
Cowboy efficiency
Two can do the job of 10 now
Cowboys skills
Roping is more prevalent at rodeos than on ranches
Cowboy on the side
Many hold full-time non-agricultural jobs.
Cowboy education
Some ranches now have internship programs to teach college students the trade of being a cowboy.
