29 The Aquarium

The Texas State Aquarium has hosted more than 5 million visitors since it opened in 1990.


   Major exhibits:
   Stingray Flats


   Touch 26 sea animals, including
David Adame/Caller-Times
Hands-on exhibits, aquariums that make you feel like you're the one being studied, and miniature habitats all help educate young children.

white spotted bamboo sharks, bull sharks, Atlantic stingrays, cow nose stingrays and southern stingrays.
   The Texas Trails
   View a 9-foot, 215- pound alligator named Bocephus from a safe distance or reach out and touch one of three young alligators named Snap, Crackle and Pop. Includes an aviary featuring birds of prey.
   Seahorse Seatopia
   This temporary exhibit runs through the end of the year. It includes pot-bellies, dwarfs, long-snout and dragon seahorses.
   Star Touch Pool
   Hands-on exhibit with hermit crabs, sea pencil urchins, horseshoe crabs and the state shell of Texas, lightning whelks.
   Otter Space
   Four river otters, Bill, Norm, Dusty and Petunia.
   Average attendance
   500,000 a year, 90 percent of whom are tourists
