They
were the years of dazzling technology, when America became a virtual community.
Even as the United States entered the last phases of its struggle to contain the
Soviet Union, Americans from 1975 to 1999 became obsessed with the technological
and communications revolutions that may have done more than anything else to win
the Cold War. This complex and fragmented era - disco, punk, rap and grunge all
competed for the airwaves - was also a period of political upheaval.
