The Port of Corpus Christi
has been a driving force in the city's economy since its opening in 1926. It was
25 feet deep then and cost $1.8 million to build.
Now at 45 feet deep, the port is the fifth largest port based on tonnage in the
United States.
For years the port has wanted to diversify beyond the oil cargoes that have become
predominant in its 75-year history.
Two of those efforts, a conference center and a refrigerated warehouse, have opened
within the last year.
Read more about how the Port of Corpus Christi is helping bolster the economy
as well as create new jobs in the Coastal Bend in our 75th
anniversary special edition Working for South Texas.
