Owner adds his own touch to car
John Ayala Jr. used some lowrider elements to customize Pontiac
John Ayala Jr.’s interest in customizing began because of lowriders.
But when the 19-year-old Alice resident got the keys to his 1997 Pontiac Firebird, there was an evolution of sorts.
Ayala, a college student, took some lowrider elements such as his Kandy Tangerine paint job with flakes, and mixed them with other customizing genres to create his flashy sports car.
Next on his list is more power: "So it has a little show and go," he said.
When Ayala was in the seventh grade, his cousin had a lowrider. Ayala said he fell in love with them and began customizing a bicycle
Then came the driver’s license.
His parents turned over a 1993 Escort for his use and he added new rims and a stereo.
And after he graduated, the Lowrider Lifestyles member got the Firebird and started its transformation.
"I just kind of added my own touch to it," he said.
The car club to which he belongs boasts members with all types of cars; those that don’t fit the lowrider name simply add the word Evolution across the top of the windshield to denote that it’s a car of a different sort.
As for his car, he plans to keep making changes to it and has taken it to car shows to display its various developments, such as its conversion from red to tangerine thanks to a paint job from Mr. Z’s Paint and Body Shop in Alice.
Ayala said he enjoys car shows because they offer a chance to show the alterations such as a television screen he installed and to get together with people who have interests similar to his.
"It’s sort of like a family meeting," he said.
