Teens meet dolphins, other sea creatures

By Nancy Ortega

Almost as soon as the ride starts aboard the Duke, dolphin fins are seen.
“At first it looked like a shark,” said Mandy Avila, one of the teens on board. “It’s so cool seeing the dolphins, almost like seeing ... Flipper.”
Everyone gathers around when Bryan Curry, the Duke’s first mate, pulls up a net to see what has been caught.
Squids, crabs, and various fish are found in the net. With everybody crowded around to get a look at the creatures, all you can hear is people yelling, “I can’t see! I can’t see!”
Curry places the animals carefully in a tank filled with water so that the teens can see and have a hands-on experience.
He also passes around a small container filled with saltwater. Attached to the container is what looks like a small pair of binoculars. Looking through the binoculars and into the tube of water, microscopic creatures are visible floating around in the water.
As the boat ride begins to slow down and head back to port, a large ship, the Rich Duchess, passes by. Jumping in front of the ship are none other than the friendly and spirited dolphins. Said to “ride the waves” in front of large ships, the dolphins display a few tricks in a daring and boastful manner.
