Teens surprised at how close animals get at Choke Canyon

by Andrew Aranda

James Bieniek waits patiently as deer glance at him.

Unlike the other youths who had gone to Choke Canyon State Park’s Calliham Unit, James does not move. Instead he sticks his hand out as if he has food.

Finally a deer approaches him.

James gently touches the deer’s head and then the deer, not finding food, takes off.

James didn’t expect he would be so close and even touch a deer. It was surprising to see how close people could get to the deer. The deer seemed adapted to humans and aren’t scared.

We also saw deer come right up to some campsites. The reason so many deer come out is that many people throw corn out near the edge of the road or in open fields to attract them.

But James didn’t use any food; maybe the deer thought he wouldn’t harm him.

We all had a great time observing deer and also saw a javelina. We also went to see alligators, but were unsuccessful. Still it was amazing to see that people were camped right near the water not far from signs that warned of alligators.
