Two elementary schools in Corpus Christi will soon be in new buildings.

Shaw-Lozano Elementary School will get a new facility on the city’s west side and Oak Park Elementary School will get one on the north side.

Construction is set to begin in June. The projects will cost the Corpus Christi Independent School District between $11 million and $17 million.

"We are really excited for the students and parents in this community," said Principal Faye Webb with Shaw-Lozano Elementary School. "It’s about time we had a new school in this area."

Gignac & Associates of Corpus Christi designed Shaw-Lozano. It will be built at the corner of Soledad Street and Virginia Avenue.

Richter Architects of Corpus Christi will present their final design to the school board on Thursday for Oak Park. Oak Park Elementary will be located on 3801 Leopard St.

"We are excited that we are building the new schools after five years," said Manuel Flores, a school board member. "The new location (for Oak Park) is toward the main population, and we want to do our part to revive that part of the community."

The school district is looking into options for the existing school buildings. The Oak Park facility could be sold and converted into a nursing home facility or office space, Flores said.

School officials are unsure of what will be done to the existing Lozano facility.

The new Shaw-Lozano Elementary will accommodate 750 students. Oak Park’s capa-city will be 550. Both schools will have room to expand.

Shaw consolidated with Lozano Special Emphasis Elementary and has an enrollment of 620 students. Oak Park has a student population of 538. The target opening date for both schools is August 2005.
