Buc Days BBQ challenge pits more than 60 teams against each other
Wash down that barbecue sandwich with a little Juice Newton. Billboard Magazine’s
1982 and 1983 Album Artist of the Year has a new CD, and she will be the featured
performer at 10 p.m. Saturday night in the Texas Tent. Rotel and the Hot Tomatoes
take the stage at 7:30 p.m. tonight to play three, one-hour sets.

New: funhouse for the kids; extreme Freak Out for kids at heart
Some of the first carnival attendees may be introducing their grandchildren
to the event, now in its 65th year. Crabtree Amusements is back this year with
more than 40 rides as well as about 20 rides for pint-sized buccaneers. Owner
Pat Crabtree’s daughter makes the carnival’s coveted corn dogs.

Dance students from across nation will strut stuff at Harbor Playhouse
Skirts will be swirling as dance students from around the nation compete at
the Harbor Playhouse. Professional dance judges from Mexico and audience members
can see folkloric dances from various regions of Mexico. Dance categories include
solo, duo, ensemble and large and small group.

City loves a parade: 150,000 likely to see 130 entries
Taking a cue from legends of buccaneers parading showing off the fruits of
victory, the illuminated night parade shows off the city’s treasures with professionally
designed floats, marching bands and more.

3,000 children, 200 clowns will be feature of parade
This year’s theme is “Sailing the High Seas—Back to Our Nautical Roots,” and
more than 20,000 spectators will be lining the parade route to watch more than
3,000 children ages 14 and younger from daycare centers, youth groups, civic,
public and private groups.

For the new Miss Buc Days, she’ll hit the books,
ride in many parades
The highlight of the pre-parade show is the selection
of Miss Buc Days 2004. She’ll be chosen from 20 contestants, and will receive
a $20,000 scholarship to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi’s Happy offers songs, and shenanigans
It’s like a half-time show before the game. The Buc Days Pre-Parade Show has
evolved into a main event, featuring top-shelf entertainment and the coronation
of Miss Buc Days.

Saturn Ion 2 Quad Coupe raffle will raise funds for scholarships
A $5 bill could get you a 2004 Saturn Ion 2 Quad Coupe. New this year to Buc
Days, the organization has established a Super Raffle to fund scholarships through
the Buccaneer Commission Scholarship Foundation. Because of the raffle, all 20
Miss Buc Days contestants will receive a scholarship.

Popular Mutton Bustin’ event for cowpunchers-to-be featured again
For some, this rodeo is child’s play. Local wrangler wannabes can sign up for
Mutton Bustin’, where children at least 5 years old and under 55 pounds compete
to see who can stay on a sheep’s back the longest.
