The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Tryon was captain of the Kentucky State University men’s
basketball team from 1978 to 1980, and as a police detective today he still possesses
a physical persona that would strike fear into any fleeing felon.
Tryon also lends some of his muscle to community volunteer work. He is president
of 100 Black Men of Corpus Christi, which helps minority children.
Tryon
is a plain-clothes detective now, but when he wore a uniform and patrolled the
streets in a police car several years back, women sometimes flirted with him when
he pulled them over.
"They would say, ‘Wow, you’re big!’ " Tryon said. "They can flirt all they want,
but I keep it on a professional level and say, ‘Thanks for the compliment, but
here’s why I stopped you.’ "
