RIDING THE WAVES: Jim Ceserani of Corpus Christi rides the swells in his ocean kayak at J.P. Luby Surf Park. Corpus Christi’s consistently strong winds also make it a good spot for surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Emily Witt and her fiancee, John Horne, loved to spend their free time wakeboarding, until they found themselves without access to a boat. So, on a whim, the couple drove from Houston to Corpus Christi to try a sport they had only heard about in passing.
One lesson with Zero Gravity Kiteboarding School, and three hours later the soon-to-be-married couple had a new love in their life - kiteboarding.
"We had such a great time," Witt said. "We have already started buying the equipment and are trying to figure out what size kite we need. It was just a ton of fun."
Kiteboarding is just one of the outdoor water sports - along with surfing, kayaking and windsurfing - that is enjoyed on the Coastal Bend waterfront.
But activities are not limited to the waterfront. Sporting events such as soccer, football, baseball, softball, golf and tennis, just to name a few, are available at various locations.
"People don't realize what they've got in this city," said Buck Ashcraft, manager of Zero Gravity, who is Witt and Horne's instructor. "For every one time you have gone surfing, I've been kiteboarding probably 15 times."
Witt and Horne went on their trip hoping to find better wind conditions. What they found was a sport surging in popularity in Corpus Christi.
"John has some cousins in Corpus Christi, but other than that, we probably wouldn't normally have gone," Witt said. "But now that we are into kiteboarding, we can use visiting his cousins as an excuse to come down and kiteboard. The conditions are perfect, and the weather is fabulous."
