Numerous homes, both new and old, have been overtaken by mold. There are some
signs you can look for that may indicate mold is present in your home. Have you
or family members experienced difficulty breathing or wheezing? Do your eyes seem
to be sensitive to light, constantly burning, watery, and red while in your home?
Sore throats, nose and throat irritation, shortness of breath or skin irritation
may be a sign of a mold problem.
One of the most important things you can do if you suspect possible mold growth
is to hire a service company to inspect the air quality in your home. A reputable
service company should test your home’s air, provide you with a detailed lab report,
and discuss the results with you.
"Seeing is not always believing. Many molds are not visible to the naked eye
and need to be identified by testing," says Gaston Garrett, owner of Aaron’s Environmental
Service Company. Garrett has inspected homes in the Coastal Bend, and maintains
prevention through inspection is the key to a safe and healthy environment.
Check potential mold growth areas, including walls in and around showers, toilet
and bath. Areas around pipes, water heaters, and washing machines are also places
to check for mold. If you suspect mold, or are uncertain what to look for, call
a professional service company to inspect your home; it will give you greater
peace of mind, and help maintain the value of your home. Companies, such as Guarantee
Air, will professionally inspect and test the air in your home, and if the lab
reports and inspection come back clean, they will issue a one-year certificate
of clearance, which can be renewed yearly.
Garrett also warns to be aware of the abundance of scam companies that claim to
rid your home of mold.
Be sure the service company you hire is reputable, warranties their work, and
can give your references of past customers. If mold is present in your home, you
can either clean the moldy areas yourself, or hire professionals to do it for
you.
