How To Do Almost Anything
How to PROTECT YOUR HOME
|
Tips:
Properly sized and installed quality equipment, filtration and humidity controls
are of the utmost importance for controlling the air quality in your home or business.
Look for a ‘MERV‘ rating of 10 or more when choosing air conditioning filters.
The higher the rating, the higher the efficiency.
UV lights can destroy mold and bacteria when installed at the evaporator coil.

Ask Chris Mundahl, president of A.C. Distribution, a question about your air
conditioning and you’ll most likely end up getting an education on more than just
air conditioning equipment. You see Chris, a native South Texan, is very concerned
about the air quality issues faced by homeowners living in our climate. We wanted
to ask him about this and other issues of concern to homeowners.
Q: What should a homeowner look for when purchasing central air conditioning
to protect their health and home?
A: Properly sized and installed quality equipment, filtration and humidity
controls are of the utmost importance. High Efficiency Filtration will greatly
reduce your indoor coil and ductwork from becoming loaded with particulate. The
good filtration will prevent you from having to clean your coil or ductwork for
15 to 20 years if ever. Also you eliminate the food supply for mold plus more
importantly you stop the mass circulation of mold, bacteria, and viruses through
you’re a/c system proportionate to the rating of the filter.
Q: How do you rate filters?
A: Recently a very reliable rating system for filters has been developed
and agreed to by most manufactures, which is called the "MERV" Rating. The higher
the number, the better the efficiency. We recommend a MERV of 10 or greater which
is approximately 1100% better than the traditional spun-fiber "see though" filter.
Q: What products are available for indoor air quality concerns?
A: Apart from Air Cleaners and Electronic Filters, some air conditioning
companies now offer UV Lights that can be installed at the evaporator coil.
If properly installed UV lights will sterilize or destroy mold and bacteria upon
passing through the light. There are "Thermidistats, "Energy Recovery Ventilators"
and more. I can’t mention all of them or how they work in this interview, but
people are welcomed to call me with any questions they may have.
