Work with your child’s teacher.

The carefree days of summer are quickly coming to an end.

Preparing to go back to school can be a challenging experience for children and parents - whether it’s the first day of kindergarten or high school. This event can be one of the most difficult days in a child’s life, but it doesn’t have to be. Driscoll Children’s Hospital has a few tips to help you and your children prepare for fun-filled days of reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Before the first day of school:

  • Make sure your child is current on all immunizations. Most schools will require a copy of an up-to-date record.
  • Check to see if your child will need a physical before entering school. Have this done before the first day, and have a copy placed in your child’s permanent record.
  • Involve your children in decisions about school clothes and school supplies.
  • Ask for a tour of the school before the first day. This will help ease the anxiety of going to a new place.
  • If your child will be walking to school, walk the route with him or her several times before school begins, and discuss pedestrian safety tips. Things to do once school begins:
  • If your child will be riding the school bus, discuss school bus safety with him. Show them where to wait for the bus and where they will be dropped off.
  • Set up a quiet place away from the television for your child to study.
  • Work with your child’s teacher to help your child develop good study habits and become a lifelong learner. Be involved in your child’s homework. This allows you to see what your child is studying. Be at home and available during homework time to encourage your child and show you value homework.
  • If your child takes his lunch, pack healthy, balanced meals that are also fun for kids. Remember to make a balanced meal that’s not full of sugar. For more information about preparing your child for school, ask your pediatrician, or go to www.driscollchildrens.org.
