How to choose an AUTO REPAIR SHOP

Tips:

Shop around for the best prices.

Ask a neighbor or friend to recommend a repair shop.

Get a written estimate of the work before it is done.

Check the warranty on any work to be done.

Inquire if they use "Chilton’s" reference guide for pricing. (A guide which indicates how much time is needed to install parts.)

If you live in a small town, or have resided in one neighborhood all your life, chances are you’ve found a good auto repair shop. But what if you just moved into a new community or are unhappy with your present auto service? How do you find a competent auto repair facility?

Cande Deleon, owner of Leon Tire Company, suggests you start shopping for a repair facility before you need one. Ask friends and associates for recommendations. Once you have the list of recommended repair shops, take some time to visit and check that they are neat, well organized, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own, and modern equipment in the service bays. Ask the service writer if the repair facility specializes in or handles you type of work. Make certain the shop supplies a written estimate of the work and the time it will take to complete the job, Deleon says. If you are quoted a price on a job, inquire about the price at another shop. Look for policies regarding labor rates, diagnostic fees, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment. Check the warranty on the work to be performed, as warranties may or may not include both parts and labor. Repair shops, like Leon Tire, offer one-year warranties as well as lifetime warranties. Brand name products ususally carry nationwide warranties. Lifetime warranties are usually 10-15percent higher than parts with a one-year warranty.

Is your vehicle going to be ready today? Try to arrange for alternate transportation in advance so you will not feel forced to choose a shop based on location. Repair shops should show you what needs to be repaired or replaced and why.

Utilizing these helpful tips, and checking with the Better Business Bureau will help you find a reputable repair facility. can do in Corpus Christi if you're a participant from out-of-town.
