Goliad man dies after car flips
A Goliad man died at about 5 a.m. Sunday after his car spun out of control and flipped four times just east of Beeville, Department of Public Safety officials said.
Lamar Pompa, 23, was alone in his 1981 Toyota Celica, traveling eastbound on U.S Highway 59 about a mile east of Beeville when he lost control of his vehicle at about 3:55 a.m.
According to DPS reports, Pompa's car left the road on a curve and started spinning in a bar ditch, then hit a driveway crossing the ditch, flipping his car. Pompa died at Spohn Bee County Hospital at about 5 a.m.
2 airlifted to Spohn after head-on collision
Two Duval County men were airlifted to a Corpus Christi hospital early Sunday following a head-on crash near San Diego.
Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Terry Miller said Orlando Maldonado's eastbound 1990 Chevy pickup crossed the center line on Texas Highway 44 about 6 miles west of San Diego, hitting a 1991 Ford pickup driven by Ernesto Maldonado.
``They hit left headlight to left headlight,'' Miller said.
Orlando Maldonado had to be cut from his truck by crews from the Alice Fire Department, was airlifted to Spohn Memorial Hospital. Ernesto Maldonado was taken to an Alice hospital by San Diego emergency medical services, then was also airlifted to Spohn Memorial Hospital, Miller said.
Ernesto Maldonado was in serious but stable condition Sunday and Orlando Maldonado was in stable condition, a hospital official said.
Drive-by shotgun blast sends 3 to hospital
Three people were injured by a shotgun blast during a drive-by shooting shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Josephine Street, police said.
Carolyn Daniels, 35, John Simmons III, 36, and Mose Gidrey, 35, were taken to Spohn Memorial Hospital for treatment of wounds to their face, arms and upper body, police said. Their condition was not available late Sunday.
Witnesses told police that a car carrying four Hispanic men in their 20s stopped in front of a bar and asked for directions to Waldron Street. Just as someone answered them, witnesses said someone in the car fired a shot from the driver's window. The car then sped away down a side street. The vehicle returned and someone again fired a shot from the car, witnesses said.
