38 Sailing
Corpus Christi is a likely venue for the 2007 Pan American and 2012 Olympic
sailing competitions. There are reasons for that: Strong winds, almost
200 square miles of bay and a supportive local sailing community.
Sailing attracts high-income professionals here - your
choice of cardiologist or dentist is wider because of it. But sailing
is not exclusive. Boats can range from a few hundred thousand dollars,
to a few hundred dollars.
Other coming sailing events:
July 2002 - World Optimist Sailboat Championships, an international race for sailors 15 years and younger; 300 top sailors from 60 countries.
October 2002 - World J-22 Championships, almost 100 boats from 50 countries.
Home-grown champs:
Paul Foerster, silver medalist, 2000 Olympics.
Mark Foster, Corpus Christi native who now lives in Houston but still owns a home in the area, won 2000 J-22 championships.
Elizabeth Kratzig, a world-class sailor trying to earn a berth in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
