24 Dolphins
Two facts to consider: Dolphins are acknowledged to be highly intelligent
and they've chosen this area as their home. Bonus: They're fun to
watch and, lucky for us, they behave as if they know it.
Local species
The Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphin. Grows up to 13 feet
in length, 800 pounds. Eats about 50 pounds of fish a day.
Numbers
About 1,000 in the Coastal Bend region.
What's next
Dolphin Bay, a $14 million, 25,000-square-foot exhibit
is expected to open at the Texas State Aquarium in spring 2003.
The exhibit, which has drawn the ire of animal rights
groups, will house dolphins from other marine parks, and aid those
that have been wounded and need rehabilitation.
If you're lucky
Port Aransas ferry captains will throttle back to let
children see the dolphins.
Sightseeing
Ingleside-based Dolphin Connection offers boat rides
to see dolphins.
