IceRays get NM defender in trade
From staff and correspondent reports
Caller-Times
The Corpus Christi IceRays hockey team has acquired New Mexico defenseman Regan Harper in exchange for three players to be named later, Coach Taylor Hall announced Friday.
Harper is entering his third season of professional hockey after spending last season with the Scorpions, a team that has produced five of the IceRays' new players.
Described by Hall as a player with superb skating skills, Harper recorded the second best plus-minus record in the Western Professional Hockey League last season.
Harper, a native of Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, stands 6-feet-2 and weighs 190 pounds. He played with the Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central Hockey League in 1996-97 before becoming one of the top defensemen in the WPHL last season.
``We are very fortunate to acquire such a skilled defensive player,'' said Hall, whose team begins its inaugural season this October. ``Defense wins games, and that's what we've set out to do.''
Rains cause cancellation at South Texas Speedway
South Texas Speedway has canceled today's races because of pit and parking conditions from the recent rains. Tickets won for this race will not be valid for next Saturday's Doug Stone concert and race, but they will be valid for the next regular race event following the concert.
