The Corpus Christi IceRays Thursday signed Dean ``Wild Thing'' Shmyr, a right wing last played with the Reno Renegades of the West Coast Hockey League.
During the 1996-97 Western Professional Hockey League season, Shmyr played under IceRays coach Taylor Hall with the New Mexico Scorpions. Shmyr's 24 fights lead the league that year.
``Hockey is a physical game,'' Hall said. ``You win by scoring and by keeping the puck out of your own net, but it is a physical game and it's nice to have a strong physical team.''
In his seven years as a professional hockey player, Shmyr has spent time with in the American Hockey League, the Continental Hockey League and has played for the Las Vegas Thunder of the International Hockey League. The IceRays recently secured an affiliation with the Thunder.
Shmyr is the third player signed by the IceRays in the past two days. Wednesday, Corpus Christi signed Craig Coxe and Geoff Bumstead.
The IceRays begin their inaugural season Oct. 13 against the Austin Ice Bats.
