The Corpus Christi IceRays will take to the streets of the city's 78415 ZIP code this summer for a free street hockey camp if the City Council awards the team a $21,940 grant for the program.

The grant will be discussed at the City Council's regular meeting at 2 p.m. today in City Hall, 1201 Leopard St.

``This is a first-class deal, and it will be completely free to kids from 6 to 16 who live in or go to school in 78415,'' said Assistant City Manager Tom Utter.

The grant would come from state and federal money awarded to the Community Youth Development board to reduce teen crime, Utter said.

The city's 78415 ZIP code, where state officials say the majority of the city's youths and, correspondingly, juvenile offenders live, has been targeted to receive such grant dollars

The program would be produced in conjunction with the Corpus Christi Park and Recreation department.

IceRays head coach Taylor Hall said the camp would focus on teaching the basics of street hockey.

``Down here in South Texas, there's already a lot of kids that already do a lot of in-line skating,'' he said. ``We'll show them how to handle a stick.''

Children would be encouraged to bring their own equipment to the camp, but the IceRays would provide equipment for those who can't.

The co-ed camp would last for six weeks, beginning June 15 and ending July 24.
