Speckled trout

The most popular gamefish in Coastal Bend bays, speckled trout is enjoying a population boom matching the highest numbers recorded for the species in Texas waters. Their presence is widespread in the bays, passes and surf of Gulf beaches. Anglers are allowed 10 specks per day, with the average sizes running 15 to 20 inches. However, the Coastal Bend bays are noted for producing trophy trout between 30 and 34 inches in length and 10 to 12 pounds in weight. The shallow, hypersaline Laguna Madre, for example, ranks as one of the world's best bays for trophy trout. Available year-round.
