Red snapper

The staple of bottom-fishing sport in deep Gulf waters around wrecks, rocks and oil rigs, the delicious red snapper is enjoying a significant population boom in Texas waters. Anglers fishing aboard party boats regularly catch their five-fish limits of the prized reef fish in waters ranging from 10 to 30 miles offshore. The typical snapper hooked by anglers average three to five pounds, but it is a rare outing that does not produce so-called "sow snapper" weighing 10 to 20 pounds. Amberjack, grouper and vermillion and Lane snapper often share the same waters with red snapper. Available year-round.
