Fishing Help Black drum The first cousin to the redfish, black drum are frequently caught by anglers fishing for trout and redfish. Like redfish, black drum commonly congregate in large schools. Strong and determined fighters, black drum average three to eight pounds, a size referred to as "puppy drum." However, so-called bull "drum" can reach 30 to 50 pounds. The limit is five-per-day for puppy drum, but catch-and-release only for the bulls. Their numbers have climbed to much higher than average in Texas waters where they are available year-round.
