Malls adding tenants in advance of holiday shopping season

Open or to come are Rave and Pacific Sunwear at Padre Staples Mall, Trevor Stores at Sunrise Mall
With the official start of the holiday shopping season just two months away, Corpus Christi's malls are adding new tenants.
The newest additions at Padre Staples Mall include Rave, a 2,000-square-foot junior ladies wear store, which opened Saturday on the first floor of the mall. Pacific Sunwear, an apparel retailer, is scheduled to open a 2,800-square-foot store on Sept. 25. Also, Gordon's Jewelers has begun remodeling its existing store.
Sunrise Mall general manager Keith Schiff said national retailer Trevor Stores, based in Hot Springs, Ark., will open a 6,000-square-foot store in time for the holiday shopping season. Trevor Stores sells home furnishing accessories and gifts. The company operates 25 stores in the South Central and Southwestern U.S.
Schiff said management also is working to bring to the mall a jewelry store and a Houston-based retailer that specializes in men's apparel.
   Burger King
Local Burger King franchisee James Hinton has purchased a site at the corner of U.S. Highway 77 and Up River Road adjacent to the fire station at Five Points, with plans to construct a combination convenience store and Burger King.
Hinton purchased the store site from Mark Anderson and Ted Anderson. Matthew Cravey, president of NAI Cravey Real Estate Services, was the only broker in the transaction.
   Moore Plaza
Ace Check Cashing, a nationwide check cashing chain, will open a 1,200-square-foot shop at 5425 S. Padre Island Drive in Moore Plaza shopping center at the site of the former Children's Depot, a child's day care center. Work is under way on the Ace Check Cashing facility, which is expected to open sometime in October.
With the addition, Moore Plaza's occupancy rate will again hit the 100 percent mark, said leasing executive Josh Zeller of Weingarten Realty Investors, the Houston-based real estate investment trust that purchased the Corpus Christi shopping center earlier this year.
   Six Points
Deep South Music and Productions, operated by husband-and-wife team Cathy and Brian Winfrey, is open at 1702 S. Alameda St. at Six Points.
The business sells used band instruments at the front of the store and has a full recording studio in the rear. The store opened about three weeks ago and is currently working with Yorktown Baptist Church, which is recording a compact disc.
Deep South Music and Productions sells refurbished band instruments outright as well as on a rent-to-own basis, Cathy Winfrey said.
The Winfreys also do disc jockey work for private parties, weddings, etc., in the Coastal Bend.
   Walgreens
Walgreen Co., the nation's No. 1 drugstore chain in sales, has opened a new 24-hour drugstore with a double drive-through window at 1301 Airline Road, the company announced.
The new Walgreens carries some 18,000 items, including cosmetics, greeting cards, groceries, cameras and film. It also offers one-hour photo finishing and next-day photo finishing.
The store was designed with a waiting room near the pharmacy and a ``cosmetics bar,'' a free-standing rectangle of lighted display cases that's the focus of a more spacious cosmetics department.
Walgreens' Intercom Plus computer links pharmacy departments at all of its stores, keeps customer records and helps the pharmacists prepare prescriptions. It also provides special services, including tax and insurance records.
With its newest store open, Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreen now operates 2,549 stores, including five in the Corpus Christi area.
