Coastal Corp. takes unit out of service at local refinery

Executive: Change has no effect on operation of plant

Coastal Corp. has taken a unit at its Corpus Christi refinery out of service but said the move hasn't had an impact on operations at the plant.
Stock traders said the 29,000-barrel-a-day unit, known as an incremental reformer, was taken out of service late last week. They said the reformer creates blending components for high-octane gasoline.
Vicki Guennewig, vice president of public affairs for Houston-based Coastal, called the idling of the reformer a non-event and said it has ``no effect on the refinery or its operations.''
She declined to say exactly when the reformer was taken out of service or how long it will remain idle.
The 100,000-barrel-a-day Corpus Christi heavy crude refinery opened in 1962 and employs about 525 people.
It is one of three core refineries operated by Coastal. The company also has a 210,000-barrel-per-day refinery on the Caribbean island of Aruba and a 140,000-barrel-per-day refinery in New Jersey.
