The largest and brightest of the five terns that can be seen in this area, Caspian Terns have heavy orange bills and black crests with white bodies. In flight they may be identified by dark underside of the primary feathers of their wings.

These tall, resident wading birds stand spaced out in the marsh at Hans Suter Wildlife Area. They also fish the shallow waters beside Kennedy Causeway and of Packery Channel County Park.
