South Texas birds: Bird 2

Brown Pelican

No longer scarce here, these large prehistoric looking birds soar and dive along the bayfront where they have taken up headquarters on a small fill deposit known as Sunfish Island. They can easily be seen from the Art Museum, the drydocked Lexington Aircraft Carrier, or fom the seawall.

Cardinal

Northern Cardinals are also town birds but can be found in thick brush in rural areas. The male is scarlet with a pronounced crest and a black face mask around a red bill. Th female is a pleasant, bright brown and also wears a crest. Distinctive cheerful song, "cheery, cheery, cheery" or ``"pretty, pretty, pretty." Look for cardinals in Flour Bluff.
