South Texas Birds: Whooping Crane
Whooping Crane

Whooping Crane

Extremely rare; wild population totaled 78 in 1981. Breeds in northern bogs, winters in tidal coastal prairie. Note the adult's white head and body, bare red face and crown, and black primaries of all birds. Young are reddish-brown, lighter below. Black and white pattern of flying birds is more like that of Snow Goose than that of American White Pelican or Wood Stork. Very long neck and white tail of Whooping Crane are diagnostic. Call, a vibrant trumpet note.
