Bumstead lifts IceRays to overtime triumph, 4-3

By MARK BUTTON
Staff Writer

Don't ever say all Geoff Bumstead does is fight.
After serving a two-game suspension for his fouth game misconduct Friday, the nasty bald-headed Bumstead slapped home the game-winng goal in an overtime shootout to give Corpus Christi a 4-3 victory against Monroe Saturday at Memorial Coliseum.
With the score tied, 2-2, in the overtime shootout, Bumstead took the game's final shot. The Western Professional Hockey League leader in major penalties stuck a forehand wrist shot over the left shoulder Monroe goalie Martin Engren, giving the IceRays their first win of the second half of the season and their seven overtime win.
Equally as gutsy, Corpus Christi coach Taylor Hall called on a rookie defenseman to take the fourth shot in overtime. Monroe scored with its second and third shooters and the IceRays' Pavel Evstigneev scored Corpus Christi's first overtime goal on the team's third attempt.
Bob Quinnell, a rookie defenseman who turned 26 on Jan. 12, scored on a wicked backhand to knot the score in the overtime. Corpus Christi goalie Frank Caprice, back from a 23-game absence because of a knee injury, then stopped Monroe's Don Hearn and Rob Friesen to set the table for Bumstead.
The game-winner was Bumstead's 15th goal of the season.
Corpus Christi improved to 21-15-4 and remain in a first-place tie with Waco in the WPHL Central. Monroe fell to 21-18-3.
Chris Robertson scored two goals and recorded an assist improving his season point total to 65.
Just as they did in their 4-1 loss to Abilene Friday, the IceRays gave up two early goals, digging a familiar hole from which to dig out.
Monroe right wing Dorian Anneck scored a rebound goal 5 minutes, 58 seconds into the game after IceRays goalie Frank Caprice denied a Don Hearn shot from the point.
Fifteen seconds later, Monroe had a three-on-two break in the IceRays zone. Kelvin Solari ripped a wrister loose just after cross the blue line. The low knuckling shot found a home in the net as it slipped past right leg pad of Caprice.
   Monroe led early, 2-0.
Corpus Christi answered with a shorthanded goal 9:39 into the first. Defenseman Bob Quinnell took a pass from Robertson and fired a one-timer into the top right corner of the Monroe net. Mike Tomlinson also recorded his 20th assist on the goal, the IceRays' fourth shorthanded goal of the year.
For Robertson, the assist was his 40th.
Monroe outshot Corpus Christi through one period, 12-10, and the Moccasins took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Robertson then knotted the contest, 2-2, just 33 seconds into the second period. The two-time WPHL all star batted down a pass out of the air from Bumstead and shoved it by Engren. Regan Harper, another Corpus Christi two-time all star, recorded his 11th assist on the goal as well.
The tie lasted all of 41 seconds.
The Mocassins reasserted their lead on Solari's second goal, a low blast from the left face-off circle. With 18:46 to go the second period, Monroe led, 3-2.
Robertson netted his second goal in the final minute of the second period to tie to game, 3-3, after 40 minutes.
Corpus Christi continued to apply offensive pressure in the third, but Monroe seemed content to play conservatively and head to the overtime shootout. The IceRays had a goal disallowed in the final minute of regulation.
