IceRays skate by Brahmas

Sharapov's hat trick caps 6-2 road win

From staff and correspondent reports

FORT WORTH - Corpus Christi's Vadim Sharapov recorded the IceRays' third hat trick of the year in a 6-2 victory over Fort Worth Sunday at the Tarrant County Coliseum.
The IceRays won their third consecutive game and remained undefeated on the road with the victory. Corpus Christi improved to 8-3, 4-0 in away games.
The IceRays' 16 points keeps them atop the WPHL Central Division. Fort Worth fell to 5-5.
Corpus Christi forwards Lorne Toews and Pavel Evstigneev have also recorded hat tricks this year.
Sharapov had an assist to accompany his three goals; he has six goals and 20 points this season. Fellow Russian Pavel Evstigneev and Californian Craig Coxe also provided much of the offense, including four assists, in the win. Evstigneev scored two goals and raised his total to 13, tops in the Western Professional Hockey League.
After Sharapov's third goal - scored midway through the third period - the game turned violent. Fort Worth took out its frustration with rough play and instigated several fights. Corpus Christi's Bob Quinell, Roger Lewis and Phil Valk all took five-minute fighting penalties in the third.
The IceRays' first line of Chris Robertson, Geoff Bumstead and Toews remained productive after racking up six points in Saturday's 3-1 victory against Central Texas. Toews scored his eighth goal of the year, and Robertson had two assists to raise his point total to 22. Bumstead had one assist.
In a mostly quiet second period, Sharapov and Estigneev scored goals within 15 seconds of each other to give Corpus Christi a 5-2 lead.
The IceRays jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first behind a goal from Toews and Sharapov's first. Fort Worth came right back, however, as goals by Barry Cummins and Phil Miaskowski tied the game, 2-2.
A late first-period goal by Evstigneev gave Corpus Christi the lead for good.
Corpus Christi goalie Scott Barber improved to 1-2, blocking 31 of 33 Brahma shots on goal. The IceRays entertain Austin Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
