Mudbugs send IceRays to second straight road loss, 4-1
From staff and correspondent reports
SHREVEPORT, La. - The Corpus Christi IceRays got off to a rough start early and it didn't get better the rest of the night when they fell to their second straight road loss after a 4-1 thumping by the Shreveport Mudbugs.
The loss dropped the IceRays to 13-7-1 in the Central Division of the Western professional Hockey League. Tonight, the IceRays take their slim three-point hold on first place in the division to Waco where they'll play the Wizards.
Shreveport got ahead just 2:21 into the first period when the league's leading scorer Doug Lawrence added to his total with a shot he fired past IceRays goaltender Scott Barber. It was Lawrence's 16th goal of the season.
The Mudbugs scored the first of two power play goals at 9:53 of the first when center John Vacchiarelli beat Barber on assists from Lawrence and Dale Henry.
Vacchiarelli came back with another power play goal at 2:51 of the second period from Jim Sprott and Dave Nielsen for a 3-0 advantage.
The IceRays were able to close it 3-1 when Geoff Bumstead scored at 12:06 of the second on an assist from Craig Coxe but Trevor Buchanan closed out the scoring on an unassisted goal at 16:32 of the period.
Corpus Christi had one late chance to get back in the game on a power play but Hugo Hamelin made three big saves and the IceRays finished 0-for-4 on the power play.
Lawrence, the league's player of the week, finished the game with a league-high 43 points.
