IceRays outduel Odessa in shootout, 1-0

Genik notches shutout as Corpus Christi nets fourth straight win

From staff and correspondent reports

ODESSA - In just his second professional start, Corpus Christi goalie Jason Genik held Odessa scoreless for three periods and an overtime shootout as the IceRays defeated the Jackalopes, 1-0, Fri day night in a Western Profes sional Hockey League game at the Ector County Coliseum.
Stopping 32 Odessa regulation shots and three more in the shoot out, Genik improved to 2-0 on the year. Only two goals have been scored on the 24-year-old Genik.
One of Genik's best saves Fri day came in the shootout, when Odessa's Ryan Equale charged the net and slid the puck to his backhand, sending Genik sprawl ing to the ice. Genik, turned around such that his back faced Equale, still made the save.
"I just threw up the glove," Genik said. "He deked me out; I went the wrong way. But you never give up on a breakaway, so I just laid the glove out there and the guy made the mistake of not going up high."
Corpus Christi (13-5-1) has won four straight, three of which were overtime shootouts.
"Jason was just unbelievable to night," IceRays coach Taylor Hall said. "He made that one save in the shootout and I thought he was Dominik `The Dominator' Hasek out there. There was great goal tending for both teams, but Jason was perfect.
"It's just really nice for a kid who sat around, paid his dues and waited and waited."
Neither team scored through three periods. Dave Shute, Chris Robertson and Vadim Sharapov scored for Corpus Christi in the shootout. Shute was credited with the game-winner as Genik blocked all Odessa's overtime at tempts.
The loss was the Jackalopes' sec ond straight at home; Odessa had won its first seven home dates be fore Abilene snapped the streak Thursday with a 6-3 victory. Cor pus Christi's shootout win dropped Odessa to 9-5-3.
Corpus Christi travels to Ama rillo for a 7 p.m. game today. The IceRays are 6-1-1 on the road this season.
