Second verse same as the first: IceRays post overtime victory
Corpus Christi thwarts Central Texas in shootout for second-straight night
BELTON - Two nights, two teams, two buildings two shootouts.
Too much.
Winger Brad Wingfield came off the bench as the second extra IceRays shooter in the overtime shootout and flipped a shot past Central Texas goalie Jason Carey to give Corpus Christi the edge, then goalie Scott Barber denied Peter Jas of the Stampede.
The result was a 4-3 Corpus Christi Western Professional Hockey League victory in its second overtime shootout in as many days against the same team.
This went a little longer than Friday's victory in Corpus Christi after the shootout was tied at two goals each after each team had the requisite five shots at the opponents' goal. That sent the overtime shootout into an extended overtime with each team taking a shot until one could gain the advantage.
Corpus Christi's Bob Quinell was stopped, leaving the potential game-winning shot to John Murgatroyd, whose third period goal had given Central Texas at 3-2 lead. But Barber turned back Murgatroyd's attempt, extending the overtime to another shot that proved to be the game-winner by Wingfield.
It was the third goal of the night for Wingfield who is on a weekend scoring streak. He got his second of the season Friday night then added two more Saturday before knocking home the winner.
The victory improved Corpus Christi's first-place record in the Central Division to 11-5-1, good for 23 points. Combined with Waco's (8-2-2), 3-2 overtime shootout defeat at Austin, it moved the IceRays to a five-point advantage over the second place Wizards who play at Corpus Christi today at 7:05 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum.
The loss dropped Central Texas to 4-7-3 and 11 points.
Corpus Christi fell behind by two goals, managed to scramble back into a tie, thanks to consecutive goals by Wingfield, then gave up a late goal to Murgatroyd to trail, 3-2.
An even later goal by Vadim Sharapov on a power play at 17:54 knotted the game at three and prompted the overtime shootout.
The IceRays outshot Central Texas by 50-26 but they were betrayed by their penalty killing, giving up two power play goals on five Central Texas opportunities.
Sharapov's goal was the only one of the night in eight power play attempts for the IceRays.
