Indiana congressman mugged while delivering Christmas gifts to friends
Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- Rep. Edward Pease, R-Ind., was robbed at gunpoint on his way to deliver presents to friends in suburban Washington, his spokesman said.
Police in Arlington County, Va., said a Washington resident was arrested and charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon minutes after the incident.
Brian Kerns, Pease's spokesman, said the congressman, in town for House Judiciary Committee impeachment hearings, traveled by subway Monday from his Capitol Hill home to the Crystal City area of Arlington to deliver Christmas presents to friends.
Arriving in Arlington around 8 p.m., he noticed someone following him. The person got in front of Pease, pointed a handgun at him and demanded his wallet.
Pease produced the cash he was carrying, but asked the gunman to leave him enough to ride the subway home. The gunman refused and fled down the street, Kerns said.
Keeping the robber in sight, Pease flagged down an off-duty police officer, who called Arlington police. After a short foot chase, an arrest was made, Kerns said.
Pease said he was relieved the man was apprehended.
"I wish I were back in Indiana," Pease said through his spokesman.
