70 senior volunteers honored for companion program work
Workers keep active by caring for homebound, elderly
The City of Corpus Christi recently honored 70 volunteers involved in the Senior Companion Program during a ceremony at Bayfront Plaza Convention Center.
The volunteers are senior citizens who help provide services for homebound and elderly residents, said Rebecca Huerta, the program director.
"We end up saving quite a few tax dollars that way," Huerta said. "Care at home is less expensive than if they were institutionalized."
But the program, which provides a stipend of $2.55 an hour, also helps the volunteers remain active, Huerta said.
"They are so glad to be doing something and to be active," she said. "It fills the volunteers with a lot of pride and a lot of confidence and self worth."
Five of the volunteers were honored for 11 years of involvement in the program: Trinidad Benavides, Teresa Cisneros, Genobeba Flores, Eva Quesada and Facundo Vasquez.
Three volunteers have been involved for 10 years: Jerline Cubit, Cipriana Martinez and Pete Oliver; nine years: Florencia Cadena and LuLa Stephan.
Eight volunteers have been involved for eight years: Teresa Alvarez, Hermila Galloway, Eumesinda Garcia, Elida Garcia, Nina Knapp, Marie Partington, Angela Rodriguez and Maria Rosales.

Four years: Teresa Arispe, Maria Hernandez, Macy Lyons, Enrique Ramirez, Virginia Rodriguez, Hope Sanderson and Felipa Sandoval; three years, Apolonia Cantu, Juana Pompa, San Juana Rios and Lauriano Yzaguirre.
