Sears starts remodeling its Sunrise Mall store

Company also is adjusting merchandise mix to better serve shoppers' needs

By JEFFREY TOMICH
Staff Writer

Sears, Roebuck & Co. has launched a multimillion-dollar remodeling project at its 150,000-square-foot store at Sunrise Mall.
Work to be done includes adding a complete cosmetics department and replacing all carpet, tile, furniture and fixtures, said store manager John Charlton.
Sears is also converting 5,000 square feet of stockroom space to retail area, he said.
The project should be complete Oct. 1.
Sears didn't give a total project cost, but Charlton said it will be significantly more than the $2 million spent remodeling the store in 1993.
In conjunction with the remodeling, Sears is adjusting the merchandise mix at the store to more closely reflect the needs of Corpus Christi shoppers, Charlton said.
"We will broaden some apparel lines and modify others to be more market-focused," he said.
Sears has been an anchor tenant at Sunrise Mall for more than 25 years.

Souper Salad opens

The chain, based in San Antonio, was founded 21 years ago and has 118 restaurants in 15 states, including 50 in Texas.

Massage therapy at Sunrise

Sunrise Mall General Manager Keith Schiff said Meet My Kneads has opened in 337 square feet on the ground level of Sunrise Mall. Operated by a certified massage therapist, the business offers massage therapy and related services.
Jewels and Fragrance, a jewelry and perfume retailer based in Alexandria, La., has signed a lease for 1,226 square feet on the mall's ground level, Schiff said.
