Astros thump Milwaukee, 15-2
Associated Press
Eight-run fourth inning leads to Houston's first win of young season
HOUSTON - Daryle Ward, taking Moises Alou's place in the Houston lineup, homered during an eight-run fourth inning and finished with four RBIs as the Astros routed the Milwaukee Brewers 15-2 Wednesday night.
Ward, who got a starting job in the outfield when Alou became a free agent in the offseason and signed with the Chicago Cubs, tied a career high with three hits. He had a three-run homer and later doubled home a run.
Brad Ausmus also homered and drove in four runs before a crowd of 23,381, the smallest in the three-season history of the ballpark recently renamed Astros Field.
Roy Oswalt (1-0) went six innings and allowed two runs and four hits, striking out six.
Oswalt went 14-3 with a 2.73 ERA as a rookie last season. He extended his scoreless streak against the Brewers to 19 innings before they scored in the fifth on pinch-hitter Lenny Harris' RBI single.
Ruben Quevedo (0-1) went 31/3 innings and allowed eight runs, five of them earned, on four hits and four walks.
Quevedo set down nine of the first 10 batters before Ausmus reached on an error by shortstop Jose Hernandez to lead off the fourth. With one out, Richard Hidalgo had an RBI single for Houston's first hit.
Ward's homer made it 4-0, Geoff Blum tripled and Julio Lugo doubled. Mike Buddie then relieved Quevedo and gave up a sacrifice fly to Ausmus, and Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run single.
