Outside the box
LIGHT THE NIGHT WITH PROTECTED CANDLES
When evening descends on your outdoor living space, you can turn on electric lights, but candlelight is by far more enchanting, even romantic.
Since even gentle breezes can cause candles to sputter and smoke, choose protected containers, from tealights and votives in made-for-them glasses and holders to big, pillar candles in open-ended hurricanes.
Another option is to choose a candle container with a theme. L.L. Bean offers a Coastal Beacon lantern fashioned of glass and galvanized steel. It is 13 inches high, with a 6-inch square base and features a hinged door. It comes with a 3-inch in diameter citronella candle. It sells for $39.
You can reach L.L. Bean's catalog sales by calling (800) 221-4221 or go online at www.llbeanhome.com
A FEW TIPS MAKE USING SCREWDRIVERS EASY
Press the tip of the screw through a small piece of tape and attach to screwdriver. This helps to insert screws overhead or in tight areas without falling off the driver.
Use a square-shanked screwdriver when trying to remove difficult screws from picture frames, etc. This enables you to use a wrench around the shaft and deliver more torque to the screw.
Always pre-drill screw holes in a project involving hard wood. This will prevent the wood from splitting and ruining the project.
HANDY GADGETS KEEP SCREWS FROM FLYING
Screwdriver magnetizer: When inserted in one side of this gadget, the driver becomes magnetized; in the other, it is demagnetized.
Flex shaft: This attaches to a screw gun and helps get into tight spaces, such as hanging blinds or installing brackets, as it's flexible.
Torque adjustment on a drill ensures that a screw isn't tightened too much in a project. Set low and adjust upward until the screw is at the proper depth.
