While the cable system is full of film festivals dedicated to such directors as Stanley Kubrick ("A Clockwork Orange") or Sydney Pollack ("Out of Africa"), it's encouraging to encounter a cable film series dedicated to a lesser-known - but still incredibly influential - director. Turner Classic Movies will screen all seven films from director Andrei Tarkovsky, one of Russia's most distinguished contemporary directors. The festival, which starts tomorrow and continues on each consecutive Friday throughout the month, will also include two documentaries based on Tarkovsky and the late director's diploma film, which is newly subtitled in English. "I'm not an expert on Tarkovsky," said Charlie Tabesh, vice president of programming and the mind behind the festival at TCM. "But I really like the fact that we can bring these interesting directors and films to people who wouldn't normally see them." Tarkovsky is best known for "Solaris" (which will air on TCM at 9 p.m. Sept. 14), "Andrei Rublev" (1 a.m. Saturday morning), and his final film, "Sacrifice" (9 p.m. Sept. 28), which he edited from his sick bed after finding out he had a malignant tumor. The best introduction to Tarkovsky's work is his first feature-length film, 1962's "My Name is Ivan" (11 p.m. Friday), Tabesh said. It's a bleak view of war that details 24 hours in the life of a 12-year-old Russian Scout. Tarkovsky is often compared with Kubrick, in that they often dealt with fear of technology and they told science fiction stories on a very personal level.
