Birders flocking to clubs
Have you always wanted to be a birder? Do you admire the feathered animals that fly freely through the air? Are you curious about the ones that pass through here? Do you wonder why some yards attract northern cardinals and others only house sparrows? Birding is challenging and fun, so why not join a bird club? Joining a club is a good way to begin to learn the birds. Four local groups welcome new members and visitors and lessons are available.
Clubs for all
Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi has a monthly meeting with a program on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. It sponsors guided field trips on weekends to local birding areas, some not accessible to the public. For information call membership chairwoman Barbara Olsen at (361) 992-1887.
The Main Bird Club of Sinton has several meetings annually and also sponsors guided field trips. For information about this group, call Lorene Weir (membership) at (361) 364-1243.
The Aransas Bird and Nature Club meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Wells Fargo Bank in Rockport. For information on this group call president Dinah Deyer at (361) 790-5937.
The Kingsville Bird and Wildlife Club meets monthly on fourth Tuesdays at the First Presbyterian Church, 302 W. Kleberg, in Kingsville. For information call club president Tom Langscheid at (361) 592-8055 or Anse Windham, at (361) 595-5382.
Bird school
For information about birding classes taught by Gene Blacklock, call the Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens at (361) 852-2100. For information about birding classes in the Rockport area, call Cynthia Womack at (361) 729-6887.
If you are interested in conservation and preserving habitat, two other groups are active: the Coastal Bend Sierra Club meets monthly at noon on the third Tuesday, usually at the Art Center of Corpus Christi, 100 Shoreline Blvd. For information call Pat Suter at (361) 852-7938; the Coastal Bend Audubon Society holds monthly meetings at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month.
Some birders here belong to all of these groups.
In fact, you can get started tonight: The Coastal Bend Audubon Society meets tonight at 7 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. The public is welcome to attend.
