WARM UP WITH FALL'S FAVORITE SWEATER COAT
You've seen them in The Gap and online at J.Crew, but confusion over fall's fashion must abounds: Just what is a sweater coat? For the past few years, cardigan-style sweaters have been in vogue, usually teamed with a matching sleeveless shell to make a twin set. This fall, designers have dropped the shell, made the cardigan heavier and longer, and dubbed it the sweater coat. Perhaps "cardigan coat" would have been more accurate.
Whatever you prefer to call it, the knitted garment is a key item this fall. Last popular in the late 1960s, the cover-up comes in a variety of lengths, from midthigh to ankle. Some fasten with buttons, others with a tie across the chest. And some have collars decorated with looped wool or fur. The knit may be smooth or in a cable or crochet pattern.

WRIST BANDS SIGNAL RETURN OF '80S RAGE

Not since Lynda Carter battled the bad guys as Wonder Woman have wrist cuffs been in such demand.
Be it leather or pleather, metal or beads, rhinestones or embroidery, chunky wrist jewelry is all the rage.
And you don't have to have a superhero's bank account to pick up on the trend. Sure, you can splurge on a Gucci or Chanel cuff, but those from less expensive stores are just as fun, and at low prices you just might find yourself picking one out for each ensemble.
Trust Wonder Woman here - wrist cuffs are the quickest way to up your fashion quotient. Studded leather numbers will give you an edgy, punk-rock edge, plain bands will give you an instant update and beaded cuffs will lend a touch of elegance.
Cool invisible plane, shiny gold belt not included.

HOMEMADE 'NESTS' MAKE EASY FUN FOR KIDS

Help your kids to enjoy the cooler weather that comes with August's end by building nest-like frames for pictures of birds drawn with crayon or trimmed from old magazines.
Start by gluing natural decorations to inexpensive acrylic frames or photo mattes. Twigs, seeds, rocks and dried flowers can probably be found in a local park or your yard. Affix twigs to the picture frame to create a border. Add small pinecones or ribbon to the corners for a special touch.
