For Delma, it's all about accessories

Friends call her 'Carol Brady,' but she's not giving up her style

David Pellerin/Caller-Times
Delma Edge, 32, admires the style sense of TV mom June Cleaver from ‘Leave It to Beaver,’ Lucille Ball in ‘I Love Lucy’ and Mary Tyler Moore.
Delma Edge, 32, works as an administrative secretary for Christus Spohn Health System. She's the mother of a teen-ager and has worked in healthcare for the past 11 years. Edge enjoys reading Danielle Steel, Sidney Sheldon, and Cosmopolitan and Family Circle magazines. She also walks during the evenings to keep in shape.
Q: Where do you like to shop?
A: Stein Mart, outlets in San Marcos, Ann Taylor and Talbot's.
Q: What pair of shoes do you feel most comfortable wearing?
A: Little red mesh and rose sequin slippers that my friend Laura had given me for my birthday this year. She ordered them from the Spiegel catalog. I even wore them at my wedding reception.
Q: What's your most embarrassing fashion mishap?
A: In 1996, I wore Petite Sophisticate black wool shorts during the winter season back when they were in style. That morning, I wore navy blue tights with my shorts. Another administrator pointed out the mismatch to me. I left home and I've never changed so fast. You should never get dressed in dim light.
Q: What's a nickname you are known by? Why?
A: I'm often compared to "Carol Brady" by the ladies at work because of my matching belt, shoes and purse.
Q: What are your sentimental clothing keepsakes?
A: My brown and purple crocheted booties. My grandmother who lived in Raymondville crocheted them every Christmas for all of her 35 grandchildren. I have one pair left since her death a few years ago. I'll never get rid of them.
Q: What items do you usually find at a reasonable price?
A: Shoes. I bought a pair of Martinez Valero black heels for $30 (originally $115) at William's Shoes. They have the best quality and sale price. Some other brands I like are Nine West, Enzo Angiolini and Adidas. Stuart Weitzman is another great brand, but also very expensive. The most I've ever spent is $120 for my Cole Haan loafers. I had wanted them for years and just couldn't wait anymore. They'll never go out of style. I also buy my shoes at Dillard's. Since I wear a size five shoe, I sometimes have to spend more for a good fit.
Q: What do you do with the clothing you no longer wear?
A: I give them to charities such as Goodwill and St. Vincent de Paul in Ingleside. I'm really good about my seasonal cleaning. I've been giving clothes to charity for the past 10 years.
Q: Whose style sense do you admire?
A: I admire June Cleaver (Barbara Billingsley) in "Leave It to Beaver" because she always wore pearls no matter what she was doing. I liked Lucille Ball in "I Love Lucy" for her petticoat dresses and Mary Tyler Moore for her pedal-pushers and flat slippers.
Q: How do you identify a must-have item?
A: Before you buy anything, ask yourself if you really need it. What do you already have to coordinate it with? Think if you'll still want it one month from now. If so, then go back and get it.
Q: What are some accessories you frequently shop for?
A: Scarves and belts. I have 10 scarves that were all purchased on sale for anywhere between $10 and $20. You should always have belts for all occasions. Some of my favorite brands of belts include Brighton, Fossil, Perry Ellis, Liz Claiborne and Jones New York. I used to sell accessories at Foley's and that's where I learned how to coordinate everything.
   Q: What's your all-time favorite outfit?
A: An ivory, satin cocktail dress that I wore only once to my husband's residency graduation. I bought it at Casual Corner for $50 in 1996. It's simple, yet elegant. All the compliments I received that night were enough to last a lifetime, even if I never wear the dress again.
Q: What are your golden rules of fashion?
A: Never buy shoes before you buy the outfit. It's nearly impossible to find the outfit to match the shoes. Buy the outfit first. Personally, I won't wear white pumps because they remind me of Minnie Mouse.
