Javs women finish second in LSC final

A&M-Kingsville men’s squad places third at conference cross country championship

SAN ANGELO - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women finished second, six points behind champion Abilene Christian, at the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning.
   The Javelinas had four women in the top 12, but the fifth runner finished 30th. The top five runners are used to determine the team score.
   Abilene Christian finished with 61 points and the Javelinas 67. Host Angelo State finished third with 79 points, followed by Tarleton State (84), Southeastern Oklahoma (100), East Central Oklahoma (113), West Texas A&M (139), Texas A&M-Commerce (232), Southwestern Oklahoma (257) and Eastern New Mexico (280).
   Nicole Sharp of Tarleton State was the individual winner with a time of 22 minutes, 36.64 seconds over the 6K course. Liz McCumber was the first Javelina to cross, finishing sixth at 24:32.94. Trich Sauceda was eighth at 24:48.31.
   LaShandra Ratcliff finished 11th and Nikki Spatz 12th among the 51 runners in the women's race.
   In the men's division, the Javelinas placed third behind Abilene Christian and East Central Oklahoma. The Wildcats had a perfect 15 team total, followed by East Central with 77 points and the Javelinas with 89.
   Behind the Javelinas were Angelo State (102), West Texas A&M (122), Tarleton State (126), Eastern New Mexico (166) and Texas A&M-Commerce (191).
   John Kemboi of ACU was the individual winner in a time of 25:12.24.
   Eric Rivas was 10th overall and the first Javelina to cross the finish line, running the 8K race in 27:24.29. Jacob Perez was 15th, D.J. Castro 18th and Luis Escamilla 19th.
   Forty-one runners competed in the men's division.
   McCumber and Sauceda earned berths on the All-Lone Star Conference women's team with their finishes, and Rivas was named to the All-LSC men's squad.
   The Javelinas teams will return to action Nov. 3 at the NCAA Division II South Central Region meet in Joplin, Mo.
   TAMUK volleyball team falls to Tarleton State
   STEPHENVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville had one of its best offensive games of the season but fell to Tarleton State, 3-0, in a Lone Star Conference South Division match on Saturday afternoon.
   The Javelinas had a .207 attack percentage, led by Jamie Alvarado, who had eight kills and an .800 attack percentage. Nikki Dixon had seven kills and a .545 percentage.
   Natalie Walther had 36 assists and Kim Paisley had 10 digs.
   The Javelinas are 3-25 for the year and 0-7 in conference play. The team will meet Texas-Pan American Tuesday night in Edinburg in a non-conference match.
  
   TRAVIS, HILL LEAD ISLANDERS TO VICTORY OVER CENTENARY
   CORPUS CHRISTI - Melanie Travis and Sarah Hill each tallied a match-high 17 kills to pace Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 30-17, 30-32, 30-16, 31-29 victory over Centenary on Saturday at Moody Fieldhouse.
   The Islanders (11-11) had three other players with double-figure kill totals. Lauren Smith tallied 12 kills, while Laney Bardin collected 11 and Alexis Berger 10.
   Kara Wells led the A&M-CC defense with a team-best 11 digs.
   Trailing 29-28, the Islanders rallied in the fourth and final game to notch the last three points and secure the season sweep of the Ladies.
   The Islanders put on one of their best hitting displays in the program's two-year history with 72 kills in 157 attacks and a .293 hitting percentage. Smith led the way by notching her 12 kills in 20 swings for a .600 hitting efficiency.
   Centenary (2-20) was paced by Rachel Hendrix's 10-kill, 11-assist, 7-dig effort. Catey Batte and Jessica Powers added 8 kills each in the loss.
   The Islanders, winners of five of their last six, return to action Tuesday evening as they host Texas Southern at Moody Fieldhouse at 7.
