READERS OUST PENA FROM 'SURVIVOR' GAME

Pena
|
Eighteen-year-old Jennifer Pena is out of the race. This week, the Tejano singer and local darling was bumped out of the Caller-Times' Survivor: South Texas game online at Caller.com.
Readers voted out Pena after only the second week of the contest. Self-appointed City Hall whistleblower Jack Gordy was eliminated last week.
One of the factors that ejected Pena was the calculated competition from radio personality Rex Gabriel of C-101. He rallied listeners to vote against her so that he, the second largest vote-getter after Pena, could continue in the contest.
This week's winning comment on Pena's ouster: "How annoyingly cute can you be?? Yer outta there!!," one reader wrote at Caller.com. The next round of voting lasts until 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Fourteen high-profile contestants including weathercaster Maclovio Perez and rockabilly rollicker Matt Hole remain in the running. To read the full story and vote, check out Caller.com.

BEST-SELLING AUTHOR TO READ AT MUSEUM
Novelist Sue Miller - author of "While I Was Gone," "Inventing the Abbotts," "The Distinguished Guest" and other books - will come to Corpus Christi on Nov. 3 to read from and sign copies of her newest work, "The World Below." Part of the Corpus Christi Literary Reading Series, the event will take place at the Art Museum of South Texas. In preparation for the reading, the Caller-Times will publish reviews by local writers. Miller's "Family Pictures" will be reviewed in the Sunday Books section, and a review of "While I Was Gone" will appear in the Oct. 28 Books section.
CONCRETE PLANS FOR DOWNTOWN VENUE
The Nov. 17 Insane Clown Posse concert, originally scheduled for Concrete Street Amphitheater, has been moved to the Centre Theater. That likely means that Concrete Street won't host another concert until March.
But that doesn't necessarily mean that things are slowing down for Concrete Street president Jerry LaTouf. He's working on constructing a mid-sized, 1,200-seat venue-within-a-venue, a separate sheltered area on the Concrete Street grounds. Plans are for it to open next year, and host acts that may not be a big enough draw to grace the main stage.
LaTouf says his new "Party on the Patio" venue will bring in country acts, family shows and reunion tours. Possible performers LaTouf mentioned include Leon Russell, Blondie, the Village People and Merle Haggard.
To make suggestions for next year's acts, log on to www.caller.com/oldconcretestreet and click on the The Band Forum to post request.
BRAINSTORM IDEAS AT PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP
University of Texas playwriting instructor John Walch will hold a workshop for playwrights (and wannabes) Saturday at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The free event, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is open to the public and will concentrate on helping writers generate new ideas, focusing on short writing and imaging exercises.
Walch is the artistic director of Austin Script Works. His plays have won awards from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays and the International Hemingway Festival, and have been produced in Los Angeles, New York and Austin.
