Outside the box

NON-SURVIVOR
The votes are in, and Gordy is out.
Readers eliminated local government watchdog Jack Gordy out of the Caller-Times' Survivor: South Texas game online at Caller.com.
   Why didn't Gordy last?
"It's bad enough they are already stranded, so who needs to hear all that whining?" one reader wrote at Caller.com.
Gordy's elimination leaves 15 other high-profile South Texans still in the throes of competition. The next round of voting lasts until 3 p.m. Wednesday.

   PLEASE CALL BACK
Coastal Bend residents who've had trouble contacting the Corpus Christi Symphony to order tickets for upcoming shows should know that fixes are on the way. Those trying to order tickets have been told to call back when computers are up and running again, or have had to leave messages (most of which were returned within four hours, according to symphony personnel).
Still, the symphony is committed to continuing in-house ticket sales. While symphony consultant Laura Rosenberg acknowledges that 24-hour online ordering and plenty of order takers would be nice, she says that the fees such services charge to is unacceptable. Buying two $15 tickets from the symphony costs, not surprisingly, $30. Two $15 tickets from TicketMaster, after fees, would cost at least $40. To order tickets by phone, call 883-6683.

   SPECIAL VISITOR
Altamura

The music department at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will begin hosting Distinguished Visitors in the Arts performances this spring, but a special, single distinguished visitor concert will be held Sunday in the Warren Theatre. Pianist Christina Altamura will perform. A Fulbright Fellow, Altamura began performing professionally at age 13.

   ARTISTS' REACTION
Texas A&M University-Kingsville's Ben Bailey Art Gallery will host "Reactionary Art Show: A Tribute to America Through Art" through Friday. The work, created by A&M-Kingsville students, depicts the artists' reactions to the Sept. 11 tragedies. Donations for the Red Cross will be accepted at the gallery, and some of the artwork will be on sale, with proceeds also benefiting the Red Cross. Information: (361) 593-2619.

   BREAST CANCER STORIES
The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd will host the Corpus Christi Chorale's "Sing for the Cure" at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The performance includes an 11-movement choral song cycle with orchestration, and will be directed by J. Eugene McKinley. Laurie Bryce will narrate the libretto, which is based on true stories of breast cancer survivors and their families. Tickets are $10. Call (361) 853-7472 for more information.

   WHAT'S HAPPENING
   www.ccsymphony.org
Full of useful information ranging from previews of the season's upcoming concerts to a history of the orchestra, the symphony's Web site will help concertgoers be in the know. There's even a section of proper audience etiquette, which includes the instructions, "Thou shalt not talk, or hum, or sing along, or beat time with a body part." Thankfully, air guitar is still permitted.
