Islanders volleyball falls to UTPA at tournament

EDINBURG - Jaclyn Muszynski tallied a match-high 18 kills to pace UT-Pan American to a convincing 30-18, 30-26, 30-27 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the finals of the Southern Independent Championships, Saturday evening at the UTPA Fieldhouse.
   The Lady Broncs, who also received 14 kills from Sandy Darway, upped their mark to 14-17, while the Islanders fell to 16-14.
   Sarah Hill paced the A&M-Corpus Christi offense with 11 kills, while Melanie Marcille Cox and Lauren Smith added 8 kills each in the loss. Smith and Hill combined for 9 of the Islanders' 10 blocks in the match.
   A&M-Corpus Christi advanced to the title game with a 30-23, 30-21, 30-25 thumping of Lipscomb earlier in the day. The trio of Hill, Smith and Miyuki Terry propelled the Islanders to victory over the Lady Bison. Hill hammered down a match-high 17 kills, while Smith notched 12 kills and a team-high 7 blocks. Terry recorded a career-high 9-kill, 6-dig, 4-block effort against Lipscomb.
   With victory over the Lady Bison, the Islanders secure a winning season in only their second-ever campaign. A&M-CC tallied an 8-24 mark in the inaugural 2000 season.
   Hill and Cassiana Costa were selected to the all-tournament team.
   A&M-Corpus Christi will close the year, Thursday evening as it hosts UT-Pan American at Moody Fieldhouse. Prior to the match against the Lady Broncs, three seniors -Costa, Cox and Sandi Martinez will be recognized for their contributions to the program.
