Islanders gearing up for Fall Classic

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's golf team will finish its season in the Islander Fall Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Kings Crossing Golf and Country Club.
The Islanders, who haven't played in a tournament in more than a month, will be in search of their second team title of the year. However, they figure to be tested by nationally ranked Baylor, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan, Wichita State and North Texas.
Baylor is ranked 32nd in the country by GolfWeek Magazine. A&M-Corpus Christi is ranked 73rd, while Notre Dame is 102.
The Islanders, who have broken almost every school record this fall, are expected to start the fivesome of Melissa Newman-Gillespie, Melissa Mason, Liza Mucheru, Alessandra Perez and Tiffany Soza. All five players have scoring averages of 80 or lower.
Islanders split two in volleyball: The A&M-Corpus Christi volleyball team split its two matches in the Southern Independent Championships on Friday at the UTPA Fieldhouse in Edinburg.
Sarah Hill led three players with double-digit kills to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi past Centenary 30-22, 30-22, 31-29 in the first round of the tournament.
Hill hammered home a match-high 13 kills, while Lauren Smith added 11 kills and three blocks.
In the second match, Texas-Pan American beat the Islanders 28-30, 30-18, 30-27, 30-9. Melanie Travis led A&M-Corpus Christi with 14 kills.
The Islanders (15-13) play Lipscomb at 11 a.m. today.
